Concurrent Session One – Workplace Laws: Ensuring Compliance and Managing Risk
Michelle Dawson, Madgwicks Lawyers

Workplace Laws – Understanding your obligations, ensuring compliance and managing risk

In Australia, employees have many rights and entitlements. Employers have legal obligations to ensure that these rights are afforded and entitlements met. The ramifications for employers who do not comply with their obligations to their employees can be significant.

The complexity and extent of the laws that underpin employment and workplace relations in Australia can make compliance difficult.

In this presentation, a general summary of the rights, entitlements and obligations in the area of employment will be provided. The presentation will walk participants though relevant legal issues and practical considerations, providing best-practice tips with a focus on Award and legislative compliance and risk management.

The presentation will:

  • Develop participant awareness of employee rights and entitlements;
  • Develop participant understanding of the many obligations which employers have;

Assist participants to identify key areas of risk and/or where there is a need for compliance, so as to aid risk management both for and within their own workplaces and the workplaces of others.

Concurrent Session Two – Teaching, the Brain Friendly Way

Learners learn; and learning Sticks!

From the advances in Neuro Science we now know a lot more about the Brain and how Learning happens, and ways we can facilitate this learning. In this workshop, expect to experience Brain-Friendly Learning in Practice and see how easy it is to implement into any learning context.

Word of Mouth referrals are the life-blood for any trainer or RTO and are the most cost effective marketing tool that we can have. These referrals come from happy clients. How do you go from a good trainer, leader or manager to a Stand Out one?

It’s not about getting better at what you do! The secret is to know HOW your participants best receive your training or message and knowing how to communicate so that they do.

When you can communicate to individuals and groups in a way that they are wired to receive, the impact of your training and message is magnified, retention is increased and you become a more impactful communicator.

The session will be interactive where you will learn how to:

Gillian Maxlow, Maxedout Solutions

Right now, with advances in technology, social media & the power of the internet, there’s never been a better time for businesses to gain enormous exposure & access to their niche markets and potential customers.

Inserting a Social Media Advertising Campaign into the marketing mix, will dramatically improve online visibility, to local AND global audiences, at a moderate budget compared to traditional advertising channels.

So besides having a website & social media presence, how do you ensure you’re reaching Facebook’s monthly active users?  The answer – by utilising Facebook Advertising.

Gillian is going to share why it’s necessary to implement the “5 Must Dos to creating an EFFECTIVE Facebook Advertising Campaign” by exploring:

  1. Developing growth of your brand recognition
  2. Creating more opportunities to convert potential customers into loyal advocates
  3. Gaining valuable information by improving your “social listen”
  4. Using the latest social media tools
  5. Interpreting analytics to deliver more engagement

Concurrent Session Two – Being successful by being yourself
Andrew Hughes, Andrew Hughes Training

What if you could be outrageously successful just by being yourself? If there were 4 easy steps that delivered fulfilment and success, would you want to know?

When you break it down beyond the ego, an authentic, fulfilling life is what everyone wants. Where we differ is how to get there.

In the modern world, common practice is to regard fulfilment as an external exercise, to treat life as a race to the end lined with markers of achievement and ‘success’. That normally requires a good measure of fitting-in.

Scientifically and experientially we know this approach to fulfilment is broken and backwards. Firstly, fulfilment through achievement is the unwinnable game – it’s the thirst that’s never quenched. Secondly, fulfilment and fitting-in are at opposite ends of the spectrum. It’s not possible to do both.

Can you have it all? Of course. But the journey to an authentic, fulfilling and successful life is an internal one. It springs from developing a mindset and presence that taps into your insight, leads to inspired action, and immerses you into the flow and synchronicity of life.

Come join Andrew and discover the 4 As of Authentic Success that work every time.

Concurrent Session One – Leading Change
Andrew Church, Kreative Kaizen

It’s time we became a nation of leaders who acknowledge their responsibility towards the efficiency and long-term success of their business. It’s time we worked collaboratively toward supporting the needs of our staff – as well as consumers – and build companies that last generations, instead of high-flying start-up-wonders.

As businesses develop a deeper understanding of culture, their people and what the consumer really needs (as opposed to supplying demand), Australia will see a new type of leader emerge: one who knows their role and walks the talk.

Leading change, therefore, begins with you, the leader. It’s about understanding your role as the Architect of change, or the Change Agent, and aligning your mindset, attitude and behaviour so that others can follow your clear and supporting lead.

Leading change isn’t about getting others to overhaul your business, it’s about you understanding that your business will rise and fall on the type of foundation you set it out on.

This session will include:

  • How to become a “Change Agent” and form a “change coalition” to work as a team, continuing to build urgency and momentum around the need for change
  • Implementation of the 4Ps approach to achieve an effective and sustainable purpose
  • How to adopt Lean Thinking principles to achieve a totally waste free operation that focuses on maximising your customer value
  • To develop the mindsets and skillsets necessary to lead change that will transform the business quickly, continuously and with powerful results
  • The importance of building on change and anchoring the changes in corporate culture
  • The Leading Change principles encompass all industries, whether they are service industries, education fields, government bodies or manufacturing industries.

Concurrent Session Two – How to Lead Mindfully in a Digital Age
Michelle Gennoe, On Purpose Consulting

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King, Jr

We live in a time of great challenge and controversy as the world transforms into a Digital Economy and the fundamental status quo of countries, companies and whole industries is transformed.  Mindfulness gives the tools for leaders to lead and inspire themselves and their organisations through this change.

ASIC have identified that nearly 50% of businesses fail because of poor leadership. Mindful leadership involves using tools and techniques of Mindfulness as a part of your leadership style.  Utilising these tools enables leaders to not only understand who they are, but also to adapt their leadership style based on the unpredictable nature of change that they are faced with.  The benefits of mindfulness have been linked to an increase in emotional intelligence, specifically empathy and self-regulation, and as these areas are developed being better able to manage conflict and communicate more effectively.

Leadership has many frameworks for managing the technical aspects of a company but does not have many similar frameworks for learning how to be an authentic leader or how to develop your authentic leadership style.  Research shows that 47% of the time we are mentally off-task. Even something as simple as a Mindful breathing tool, for example, can help you become more aware of emotions and stay on-task. Mindful breathing is where as an emotion comes up you start noticing the sensation in your body and you then stop what you are doing, pause, and reflect on this emotion.  In using this Mindful tool you are then learning to be more proactive (empowered by choice) rather than reactive to that emotion and mentally staying on task.

As the world transforms into a digital global economy the ability to focus when surrounded by ever increasing amounts of information and distractions will become a key leadership skill.  A study by the University of Washington on three test groups highlighted the benefits of another Mindful tool- meditation.  The study “found that only those trained in meditation stayed on tasks longer and made fewer task switches, as well as reporting less negative emotion after task performance, as compared with the other two groups.”

The presentation by Michele Gennoe- The Mindful Leadership Lady will outline a leading edge 7 step leadership development framework based on the book “Mindful Leadership” which combines the latest research in cognitive science, neurosciences and organisational transformation. In today’s world there has never been greater need for inspirational leaders who can role model, support and inspire those around them to be their best and there has never been a better time to become a Mindful Leader.

Michelle Gennoe Michele Gennoe, On Purpose Consulting

With over 20 years’ experience in leadership roles Michele has worked across corporate, government and not for profit sectors as a trusted advisor and consultant for organisations ranging from Kincare through to the Department of Education, or Red Cross. Over time the way that we lead and manage businesses has also evolved rapidly and evolved into an age where we are drowning in the information available whilst also being thirsty for wisdom behind it.

In moving from Europe to Australia with her family at the age of four Michele learned how to go through profound change and transition from an early age. Difficult family dynamics further refined these change management skills. These early lessons have carried through so that – in life and in business – Michele has been successful and is highly sought after as an authority in the leadership space.

As a keynote presenter, Michele’s authenticity is one of her greatest assets. She has the rare ability to connect with people by holding up a mirror to them and showing them the metaphoric parsley stuck in their teeth, with compassion, conviction and humour.

Michele imparts wisdom generously but with clear expectations – she doesn’t want to leave a warm and fuzzy lasting impression on her audience, she wants to have a lasting impact on the way they choose to live, work and mindfully lead as a result of what they have learned.

Michele is an award winning business author and presenter not just because her personal story is moving or because she is exceptional at breaking complex issues down into bite-sized pieces (although that certainly helps) but through her compelling examples which are relatable to her audience.

After 20 years as a leader in industries as diverse as banking, media, charity and consulting, she has been there and done it and paid close attention to what works and what doesn’t.

Michele’s advice is a combination of street smart wisdom, practical concepts and productive triggers, derived from the hard learned lessons of her own trial and error, as well as years of close observation and identification of the characteristics shared by Mindful Leaders.

Why Newcastle?

For our inaugural conference we thought it only fitting to have our first conference in our beautiful city, the location of Vivacity’s head office in Newcastle, the second largest city in New South Wales.

Here’s a little bit about Newy…

Australia’s second-oldest city, bound by a working harbour and glorious surf beaches, was forged from coal, timber and sweat but has moved on from that rough-and-tumble era to embrace a new outlook.

Clever repurposing has transformed heritage buildings. Former railway workshops house Newcastle Museum; a sandstone bank is now a French-inspired bar sparkling with chandeliers; a brewery’s 19th-century grain and keg warehouse now showcases craft beers.

Arts projects, festivals and events have transformed five inner-city precincts. Come and explore Civic, Cooks Hill, East End, West End and the harbourside Honeysuckle development. Their makeovers are all part of a 25-year plan to revitalise Newcastle, shoring up its position as a vibrant regional centre and gateway to Hunter Wine Country.

A top ten city in the world in Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2011’, this is where bohemian culture coexists with surf culture; where hip cafés and award-winning restaurants flank an industrial port; where the land meets the sea.

This is Newcastle – a city of contrast, change and endless possibility.

Reasons for sponsoring our Conference?

We have built a network of clients from all over Australia, who have struggled with managing the balance between compliance and business success, we have identified that their main weaknesses are lack of skills and knowledge of what is available to support them in their industry.

In order to address this, we want to provide a platform for our clients to learn more about the products and services that will support them in running their business, this includes having exhibitors at our conference who:

  • Are willing to demonstrate their products and/or services directly to our clients
  • Want to provide information that will support our industry
  • Are wanting to network with our delegates and learn more about what their needs are
  • Want to speak to business owners and managers, who are the decision makers of the RTO, about their products/services
